Il lavoro non retribuito viene nella maggior parte svolto da donne. Secondo il \u2019FMI in media in un giorno una donna esegue lavori non retribuiti per 4,4 ore, un uomo per sole 1,7 ore. Un dato che varia, e di molto, tra i vari paesi. In Norvegia il gap donna-uomo \u00e8 ridotto (3,7 ore contro 3), in Egitto, estremo opposto, l\u2019uomo contribuisce solo per 35 minuti contro le 5,4 ore di lavoro delle donne. I vincoli imposti dalle norme culturali, dalle caratteristiche del mercato del lavoro e dalla mancanza di servizi pubblici, alla base della minore partecipazione della forza lavoro femminile al mercato del lavoro. Gli autori identificano politiche che possono aiutare a ridurre e ridistribuire il lavoro non pagato tra i sessi.
